Spectrum ↔ Filter Explorer

Toggle a galaxy / stellar-population template, slide in redshift, and see which JWST/HST imaging filters — and which JWST NIRSpec, NIRISS, NIRCam grism, or MIRI spectroscopic modes — land on which spectral features.

Move the pointer over the plot to read observed wavelength and see which filters (from the sets enabled above) contain it — including gaps where no enabled filter covers a feature.

Continuum shapes and line ratios are stylized to be representative of each class (UV/optical slope, Balmer/4000Å break behavior, PAH complex, hot-dust/torus rise, nebular line ratios) — this is a pedagogical tool, not a stellar-population-synthesis or photoionization model. Imaging filter ranges are approximate (roughly FWHM) bandpasses for JWST NIRCam / MIRI, HST ACS / WFC3, and representative ground-based imagers (Subaru HSC, VISTA). Spectroscopic mode coverage (NIRSpec PRISM/gratings, NIRISS SOSS/WFSS, NIRCam WFSS grisms, MIRI LRS/MRS) is likewise approximate — nominal wavelength range only, ignoring detector gaps, order overlap, and the fact that MIRI MRS/NIRSpec gratings are split across separate exposures/settings. Rest-frame axis ticks re-label the same physical points as the observed axis using λ/(1+z) at the current redshift; they are not an independent physical scale. Consult the relevant JWST/HST instrument handbook for precise throughput curves and mode details before using this for proposal-grade planning. Flux is in arbitrary units and includes only a rough 1/(1+z) surface-brightness dimming term, not a full cosmological k-correction.
